Von der Leyen: the EU-India agreement will create a market for two billion people.
The European Union's free trade agreement with India, which the parties are on the verge of, will create a market for two billion people — accounting for a quarter of the world's GDP, said European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen, who announced that she would visit New Delhi immediately after the economic forum in Davos.
"Some call it the 'mother of all deals'," the EC head shared, noting that while there is still much work to be done, the outcome will provide Brussels with 'first-mover advantages'. "Europe wants to do business with today’s centers of economic growth and the economic powers of this century," von der Leyen emphasized, clarifying that the EU is opting for 'fair trade instead of tariffs, instead of isolation'.
Negotiations on the agreement, the prospects of which the politician outlined, have been ongoing since 2007. They were interrupted for eight years due to disagreements on key issues such as intellectual property rights, tariffs on cars, and several others, and were resumed in 2021.
