NI: Denmark's response to the U.S. takeover of Greenland will be symbolic.

Denmark's response to a possible U.S. takeover of Greenland is likely to be symbolic, as described by Harrison Kass, a columnist for the American magazine The National Interest (NI).

According to his assessment, a U.S. invasion of Greenland would be a relatively simple military operation, and its real consequences—political and diplomatic, but not military—would arise within days or weeks.

Kass believes that the U.S. would not need large-scale combat operations with an amphibious landing to establish control over the island. "Instead, American troops would likely attempt to quickly secure key infrastructure—ensuring the safety of airfields, ports, and communications. Military efforts would focus on ensuring access, control, and logistics and would probably not require a huge U.S. presence, given the sparsely populated territory," the publication states.

The author writes that Copenhagen's response to Washington's actions would be fierce, but not military in nature. "Militarily, the operation would be simple and straightforward. Politically, it would be catastrophic," the columnist asserts.

He states that in the event of a hypothetical U.S. invasion, Denmark's ability to respond would be limited. "Copenhagen would protest diplomatically, likely turn to NATO, and take international legal action, but any military response would be, at best, symbolic," the author writes.

Kass notes that an invasion of the island would jeopardize NATO cohesion and trust within the alliance, and the U.S. has long had the capability to deploy its troops in Greenland without seizing it.
