Banks in Russia have started to temporarily limit large cash withdrawals at ATMs. This is reported by Russian media.
When Russians try to withdraw a significant amount (the exact amount is not specified), the operation is blocked. After that, the bank calls the client and asks to confirm the action. Upon confirmation, the bank employee informs that the operation can be repeated after five minutes. When the cash withdrawal request is made again, the client receives the desired amount.
According to "Meduza," Russian banks have increasingly started blocking client operations for regular transfers between their own accounts in 2025.
The Central Bank of Russia warned that it plans to include large transfers to oneself in the updated list of fraudulent signs. The updated list will come into effect on January 1, 2026. It includes, in particular, transfers of amounts over 200,000 rubles (2,155 euros) with subsequent transfers to a third party within 24 hours.
