U.S. special envoy Steve Whitcoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner are heading to Berlin ahead of the peace summit on Ukraine. Ceasefire negotiations are set to take place over the weekend. The U.S. insists on compromises from Ukraine.
In the run-up to the peace summit on Ukraine, which will take place on Monday, U.S. special envoy Steve Whitcoff will travel to Berlin for negotiations over the weekend, several news agencies reported, citing the White House in Washington. Whitcoff will be accompanied by President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
On Sunday, talks among the foreign policy advisors of the U.S., Germany, and Ukraine are scheduled to take place in Berlin. A lot is at stake. The U.S. expects territorial concessions from Ukraine to Russia. Moscow has yet to show any willingness to retreat from its military objectives.
According to Reuters, on Monday the U.S. envoys are set to meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Heads of state and government from other EU and NATO countries are also expected to attend the meeting.
Merz announced the meeting with Zelensky and other heads of state on Thursday at a press conference with NATO chief Mark Rutte.
On the same day, Trump stated that U.S. representatives would participate in the peace talks on Monday only if sufficient progress is made in the ceasefire negotiations taking place in Berlin over the weekend.
The goal of the negotiations is to develop a peace agreement for Ukraine. The first draft was criticized for being conducted only between the U.S. and Russia without the involvement of the EU and Ukraine.
Currently, negotiations are underway on three documents. They pertain to a 20-point peace plan, security guarantees for Ukraine and reconstruction, as well as Russia's economic role.
