American billionaire Elon Musk, whose social network X was fined 120 million euros by the European Commission for violating the Digital Services Act, stated that the European Union needs to be abolished.
Tech mogul Elon Musk expressed the opinion that the European Union (EU) should be abolished so that sovereignty can be returned to individual states.
"The EU needs to be abolished, and sovereignty returned to individual countries so that governments can better represent their residents," Musk stated on the social network X.
Subsequently, Musk posted another message with a provocative question: "How much time is left until the EU disappears?".
There is speculation that this statement is related to Musk's displeasure with the European Commission's decision, which on December 5 imposed a fine of 120 million euros on the American tech company for the first time under the Digital Services Act (DSA). This was done despite threats from the White House. According to the European regulator, the social network X is developing and using its interface for verified accounts with a "blue checkmark" in an improper manner, leading users to question the authenticity of profiles and the reliability of the content published there. Furthermore, according to the EC, the microblogging service does not comply with advertising transparency requirements and does not provide regulators access to publicly available data.
Interestingly, Musk received support from the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev - the notorious Russian politician backed the billionaire's idea with the comment "Exactly so." In turn, it did not find much understanding in Europe - for instance, the head of Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radoslaw Sikorski, responded to the American billionaire by "sending" him to Mars: "Go to Mars. There is no censorship on Nazi greetings there.".
This is not the first time Musk has spoken about the need to reform the European Union. For example, in 2020, he mentioned that the EU should be reformed to make it more efficient and less bureaucratic. He has also expressed concern about the EU's influence on the sovereignty of countries and, like many others, noted that excessive centralized control can hinder the autonomy of states.
