The forty-year-old military leader brought bad news to Zelensky.
US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll warned Ukraine of an 'inevitable defeat' during a meeting with the Ukrainian side in Kyiv last week, NBC News reported, citing two sources.
According to the sources, the secretary stated that Ukrainian forces are facing a dire situation on the battlefield and will suffer an 'inevitable defeat.'
Driscoll is confident that the situation will only worsen and that it is better to negotiate a peaceful settlement now than to find oneself in an even weaker position in the future.
The US also made it clear that it would not be able to continue supplying Ukraine with weapons and air defense systems at previous levels, the sources said.
They noted that Driscoll voiced his warning after presenting a peace plan. 'The message was essentially this: you are losing, and you need to accept a deal,' one of the sources said.
Ukraine 'politely' refused to sign the peace plan as it was presented, the channel notes. The Financial Times, describing the Army Secretary's meeting with ambassadors from European countries and Western officials at the Kyiv residence of the US chargé d'affaires in Ukraine, Julia Davis, reported that a late Driscoll stated it was time to 'end this crap.' 'We have little time for peace; President Trump wants peace now,' Driscoll asserted.
