North Korea Made Russian Language Mandatory in Schools

North Korea has introduced the Russian language as a mandatory subject in schools starting from the 4th grade. This was reported by Politico.

The publication quoted Russian Minister Alexander Kozlov, who stated at a meeting of the intergovernmental commission between Russia and North Korea that currently about 600 people in North Korea are studying the Russian language. According to him, 3,000 schoolchildren and 300 university students in Russia are studying the Korean language.

The Russian official also reported that last year 96 citizens of North Korea were admitted to Russian universities, including a university that trains diplomats. Another 29 people were enrolled this year in geology courses in Russia. Future bankers, energy specialists, and medical professionals are also being prepared. He also assures that Russians are building an educational center in North Korea where classes will be taught in Russian.
