Australia Appeals Court Ban on Social Media for Children

The Australian digital rights organization announced on Wednesday that it has gone to court to suspend the law that will soon prohibit individuals under 16 from using social media, according to LETA citing AFP.

Starting December 10, Australia will require social platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, to remove profiles of users under 16 years old, or face significant fines.

The Digital Freedom Project has announced that it has challenged this law in the High Court of Australia.

"This ban is a direct assault on the youth's right to freedom of political communication," stated the Digital Freedom Project.

The organization noted that it filed a lawsuit along with two 15-year-old teenagers to represent the interests of millions of young Australians who will lose access to participating in public debates.

As regulators around the world grapple with threats related to social media, Australia's sweeping restrictions have drawn significant attention.
