The Al-Qaeda Division May Take Control of Mali

The Times: Al-Qaeda division may take control of Mali.

Radical Islamists from the group "Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin," which is a division of Al-Qaeda, may take control of Mali. This was reported by The Times.

According to the newspaper, the months-long siege of the country's capital, Bamako, threatens the overthrow of the ruling junta and the transformation of Mali into the first state in Africa under the control of terrorists.

Analyst Bakari Sambe from the Timbuktu Institute in Dakar provided The Times with an assessment of the situation in the country. He stated that the Malian state "no longer controls anything" on its territory and "is concentrating forces around Bamako to ensure the regime's security."

"The takeover of an entire country by an Al-Qaeda division is not excluded and is not unprecedented. The Taliban retook Kabul in August 2021, and the former Al-Qaeda affiliate, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, effectively seized power in Syria," the publication noted.

Earlier, Mali's Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maiga stated that Ukraine has become one of the main suppliers of kamikaze drones to terrorists worldwide. During his speech at the UN General Assembly, he emphasized that, in this regard, some Western countries should stop supplying weapons to Kyiv, as "they risk contributing to the spread of international terrorism."
