Bulgaria Deploys Forces to Take Control of Lukoil Refinery

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov stated on Monday that the country's authorities are implementing security measures at the oil refinery of the Russian oil company Lukoil in Burgas.

According to Zhelyazkov, the Bulgarian authorities are taking preventive measures to safeguard the country's critical infrastructure – particularly the Lukoil refinery.

The Bulgarian National Security Council has preliminarily announced that this includes inspections and the preparation of military police, as well as the deployment of a counter-drone system.

This comes after Bulgaria adopted legislative changes last week, allowing itself to confiscate the oil refinery and sell it to a new owner.

Bulgaria hosts a large oil refinery in Burgas, which is owned by Lukoil and supplies up to 80% of the country's fuel. The Russian company traditionally holds significant economic influence over Bulgaria.
