WP: Maduro appealed to Putin for help due to threats from the U.S.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has reached out to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for assistance due to threats from the U.S. This is reported by The Washington Post (WP) citing confidential documents.
According to the documents, Maduro requested missiles, radars, and upgraded aircraft from Russia. The letter to the Russian leader was sent in connection with the buildup of U.S. forces in the Caribbean region.
The publication states that the Venezuelan leader also sought help from China and Iran, noting that his country needs military assistance and equipment. In particular, a letter was sent to Chinese President Xi Jinping requesting an "expansion of military cooperation."
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he does not intend to launch missile strikes on Venezuelan territory. However, it was previously reported that the U.S. had allegedly identified targets for planned strikes.
