Starting January 1, Slovakia will implement a speed limit for pedestrians on sidewalks to reduce the risk of accidents, LETA reports citing DPA.
According to amendments to the transport law adopted by parliament on Tuesday, pedestrians moving on sidewalks in populated areas must not exceed a speed of six kilometers per hour.
The aim of the restriction is to enhance safety on sidewalks, considering the increase in incidents involving pedestrians and electric scooters.
The new speed limit will apply to both pedestrians and individuals moving on sidewalks on skateboards, scooters, and bicycles.
Many Slovaks are joking about the new rules on social media, however, supporters of the restriction consider it a sensible step, pointing out that drivers do not have enough time to brake if someone unexpectedly runs onto a crosswalk. Proponents of the initiative also emphasize that pedestrians are partially to blame for many incidents involving electric scooters.
