In Germany, more and more women feel unsafe

In Germany, most women feel unsafe in public places, according to the results of a survey published on Tuesday, LETA reports citing DPA.

According to a survey conducted by the Civey opinion research institute on behalf of the Funke media group, 55% of the surveyed women admitted that they feel unsafe in any of the mentioned public places — on the streets, in public transport, or in parks.

Nightclubs and train stations had the worst reputation — only 14% of women felt safe there.

Among all respondents, including men, 49% stated that they do not feel safe in any of the mentioned public places.

According to Civey, the survey was representative. It involved 5,000 people aged 18 and older. The survey was conducted online from October 23 to 27.

Despite the protests of hundreds of people against German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's statements linking immigration to problems in cities, 47% of respondents rated his statements positively, while 42% rated them negatively.

On October 14, Merz stated that the federal government is correcting past mistakes in immigration policy and making progress.

"However, we do have a problem with the image of cities, which is why the federal Minister of the Interior is simplifying and carrying out large-scale deportations," he said.

Later, Merz clarified that he was referring to immigrants without residence permits who are not working and are not complying with the existing rules in Germany.

Merz's statements were criticized as racist, as they implied that deportations should be directed against urban residents, whose composition is much more diverse than that of rural areas in Germany. The Chancellor was criticized for his remarks by both the Social Democrats (SPD), who are part of the coalition he leads, and representatives of the opposition left forces.
