The incident occurred around 18:00 when the Lithuanian Air Force detected a violation of the state border near the town of Kybartai, the press service of the Lithuanian Armed Forces reports.
"A Su-30 fighter jet of the Russian Federation, which was likely conducting a refueling training in the Kaliningrad region, and an Il-78 aircraft, which was performing the refueling, intruded into Lithuanian territory by approximately 700 meters and left Lithuanian airspace after about 18 seconds," the statement says.
In response to the incident, two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets of the Spanish Air Force, conducting a NATO air policing mission, were scrambled.
The Commander of NATO's Joint Forces, General Alex Grinkevich, previously stated that the Alliance's decisive response to Russia's incursions into Polish and Estonian airspace forced Russia to act more cautiously.
However, today's example in Lithuania shows that the Russian military did not heed General Grinkevich's warnings.
