The country on the Caribbean Sea is considered a "safe third country."
The government of Belize intends to accept migrants wishing to enter the United States. According to AFP, asylum seekers will wait in Belize for "decisions on their applications."
It is specified that a corresponding agreement has been reached between the two countries. Under this agreement, Belize is considered a "safe third country" for the temporary placement of migrants. The agreement may come into effect after approval by the Senate of Belize.
This year, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has implemented a number of initiatives that complicate migration to the country. For instance, in September, an order was issued establishing a fee of $100,000 for companies applying for H-1B work visas for skilled foreign workers. In August, the U.S. State Department announced plans to review the data of over 55 million foreigners holding valid U.S. visas to identify potential violators of American laws. Additionally, raids aimed at identifying individuals illegally residing in the country continue at a high pace in the U.S.
Belize is a country in Central America. Until June 1973, it was known as British Honduras. It borders Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west.
The eastern coast of Belize is washed by the Caribbean Sea. It is the only Central American country without access to the Pacific Ocean. It is one of two Central American countries that have access to only one of the oceans; the other such country is El Salvador, which has access only to the Pacific Ocean.
The area of the country is 22,966 km² (three times smaller than Latvia), and the population is 430,131 people (as of 2021). At one time, this country officially had a citizenship by investment program that allowed individuals to quickly obtain a passport for money. This program has long been closed, but echoes of it can still be found on the Internet from time to time.
