The Supreme Court of the Netherlands on Friday rejected Russia's last attempt to appeal a ruling in a long-running legal battle, in which Russia was ordered to pay 50 billion US dollars to the former shareholders of the liquidated oil company Yukos, LETA reports citing AFP.
"The Supreme Court rejects the appeal and obliges the Russian Federation to reimburse the legal costs of the appeal," the decision published on Friday states.
The International Arbitration Court in The Hague ruled in July 2014 that Russia must pay 50 billion US dollars to the former shareholders of the oil company Yukos, which was previously led by Mikhail Khodorkovsky. The court found that Yukos was driven to bankruptcy for political reasons, and its assets were sold off to state enterprises, which effectively amounted to expropriation.
This decision was followed by a series of appeals and counter-appeals.
The decision announced on Friday concerns Russia's renewed appeal to the Supreme Court and is not subject to further appeal.
