Russia refused to comply with the ECHR ruling and pay Georgia a quarter of a billion euros

Russia will not comply with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruling to pay Georgia compensation related to the events of 2008. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.

"This is a separate topic, a separate substance. We will not comply with the decision," said Peskov.

Thus, the official representative of the Kremlin commented on the ECHR verdict, which on October 14 satisfied the state claim of Georgia against Russia, filed in 2018. The court ordered the Russian Federation to pay Georgia 253 million euros.

On March 15, 2022, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the country's withdrawal from the Council of Europe. In June of the same year, President Putin signed a law stating that decisions made by the ECHR after that date would not be enforced in Russia.

On the night of August 7 to 8, 2008, Georgia deployed troops into South Ossetia and subjected its capital Tskhinval and the positions of Russian peacekeepers to artillery fire. After that, Georgian troops entered the unrecognized republic. Due to the date the conflict began, it is referred to as the "war of the three eights."

On the afternoon of August 8, Dmitry Medvedev, who was then the President of Russia, announced the introduction of Russian Armed Forces units into the conflict zone. Within five days, Russian and South Ossetian forces pushed the enemy out of South Ossetia, and in cooperation with Abkhaz forces, out of the Kodori Gorge in Abkhazia.

On August 26, Russia officially recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states. On September 2, Georgia severed diplomatic relations with Russia. The process of the country's accession to NATO was slowed down.
