U.S. President Donald Trump called the proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin to extend the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty a 'good idea.' Its term expires in February 2026.
U.S. President Donald Trump, in a conversation with reporters on Sunday, October 5, called the proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin to extend the New START Treaty (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) a 'good idea.'
'For me, it sounds like a good idea,' Trump said in response to a question from reporters at a briefing at the White House.
What exactly did Putin propose
At a meeting of the Russian Security Council on September 22, the Russian president stated that the country is ready to adhere to the agreement for at least another year after its expiration on February 5, 2026.
At the same time, Putin pointed out that with the expiration of the New START, the last international agreement directly limiting missile and nuclear capabilities would disappear. 'A complete abandonment of the legacy of this agreement would be, from many points of view, a mistaken and shortsighted step,' he stated.
Russia suspended participation in New START in 2023
The New START Treaty was signed in 2010 by then-presidents of Russia and the U.S., Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama. In 2021, it was extended for five years. After the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Kremlin leader repeatedly threatened the use of nuclear weapons. Additionally, in recent years, Russia has revised its nuclear doctrine and deployed nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus.
In February 2023, Russia suspended its participation in New START, accusing NATO of involvement in strikes against Russian strategic facilities.
