The Argentine Congress dealt a new political blow to President Javier Milei on Thursday by revoking two of his vetoes on laws increasing funding for public universities and pediatric care, LETA reported citing AFP.

The Senate revoked both vetoes that had previously been rejected by the lower house of Congress — the Chamber of Deputies. Thus, since Milei took office as president in December 2023, Argentine lawmakers have revoked his vetoes three times.

The Senate overturned Milei's veto on the emergency funding law for pediatric care with 59 votes against seven, with three senators abstaining. The veto on the law for funding public universities was rejected with 58 votes against seven, with four abstentions.

In early September, Milei's party suffered a defeat in the elections for the legislative assembly of the province of Buenos Aires, which were seen as a litmus test of the president's popularity. A center-left Peronist coalition won there.

A serious test for the 54-year-old Milei will be the midterm elections for the Chamber of Deputies scheduled for October 26.

Milei came to power promising to revive Argentina's economy and curb inflation. He has managed to reduce high inflation and achieve a budget surplus by significantly cutting government spending.
