Those who take advantage of the dividends from frozen Russian assets to assist Kyiv "will be subjected to prosecution," said the press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov.

The Kremlin commented on the European Commission's plans to provide funding to Ukraine from the revenues of frozen Russian assets. The corresponding statement was made on Wednesday, October 1, by the press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov.

"This is about plans for the illegal seizure of Russian property, in Russian terms - theft," Peskov said.

If someone wants to "illegally appropriate" "our assets," "take advantage of the dividends" from them, then those individuals "involved in this one way or another will be subjected to prosecution," the agency Interfax quoted him as saying.

The Kremlin representative also stated that not only individuals but also countries will be held accountable. "This cannot remain without a response, of course," Peskov added.

EC President: We are not confiscating assets

Earlier, on October 1, the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, called for support for the initiative to provide billions of euros in loans to Kyiv, secured by frozen Russian assets.

Von der Leyen and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that this could involve allocating additional funds to Ukraine amounting to up to 140 billion euros.

"We are not confiscating assets. Ukraine will have to repay this loan if Russia pays reparations," the EC chairwoman's words were reported by the dpa agency.

About 200 billion euros of frozen assets of the Central Bank of Russia

According to the European Commission, about 200 billion euros of assets of the Central Bank of Russia have been frozen in the EU amid the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Most of these funds are held in the Brussels securities depository Euroclear.

An informal summit of EU heads of state and government is taking place in Copenhagen on October 1 due to violations of the airspace of EU countries by Russia. At the meeting in the Danish capital, EU leaders are discussing Europe's defense capabilities in light of the war in Ukraine. Additionally, further assistance to Kyiv is being discussed.
