After a long day, the bed seems like the safest and coziest place in the house. However, the mattress, pillows, and blankets can attract not only humans. Warmth, darkness, moderate humidity, and the constant presence of organic particles create ideal conditions for the life of various microorganisms and insects.
Some of them are practically invisible and feed on dead skin cells, while others can bite humans and cause significant discomfort. Experts explain what unwanted inhabitants can settle in your bed and how to detect the problem in time.
Dust Mites: Invisible Neighbors
Dust mites are considered the most common inhabitants of bedding. They cannot be seen with the naked eye, as these creatures measure less than half a millimeter.
They do not bite humans and do not feed on blood. Their main source of nutrition is tiny skin particles that are left on bedding and mattresses every day.
The danger comes from the waste products of the mites, which can cause allergic reactions, runny nose, cough, eye irritation, and skin itching.
"Dust mites are present in almost every home. It is impossible to completely get rid of them, but regular cleaning, airing out, and controlling humidity can significantly reduce their numbers," notes allergist Natalia Voronova.
Bed Bugs: The Most Unpleasant Guests
Bed bugs are among the most problematic household parasites. During the day, they hide in the seams of mattresses, folds of furniture, and cracks in beds, and at night they come out in search of food.
Bugs feed exclusively on human blood. Their bites are usually grouped or arranged in characteristic lines and are accompanied by itching.
In some people, the reaction is limited to slight redness, but pronounced allergic manifestations are also possible.
"The main difficulty in fighting bed bugs lies in their ability to go without food for a long time and spread quickly throughout the room. When insects are detected, it is important to take measures immediately," says disinfection doctor Alexey Gromov.
Silverfish: Lovers of Warmth and Darkness
Silverfish look like small elongated insects with a silvery color. They prefer damp and dark places—spaces behind furniture, baseboards, and in various cracks.
Silverfish do not bite humans and do not feed on blood. They are attracted to organic residues, dust, paper, fabrics, and waste products of other small organisms.
Although they usually do not pose a serious threat to human health, their presence may indicate increased humidity and insufficient cleaning of the premises.
How to Tell if Parasites Have Appeared in Your Mattress
Experts recommend paying attention to the following signs:
- Itchy bites after sleep;
- Small bloodstains on sheets;
- Dark traces or spots on the mattress;
- Remnants of chitinous shells after insect molting;
- Worsening allergies without an obvious cause;
- Appearance of insects near the bed, baseboards, or furniture;
- A specific sweetish smell in cases of severe bed bug infestation.
If several signs are present, it is worth carefully inspecting the mattress and adjacent furniture.
How to Get Rid of Unwanted Neighbors
Thermal Treatment
Most household parasites do not tolerate extreme temperatures well.
Frost below –20 °C can kill many insects and their larvae. High temperatures are equally effective. Washing bedding at 60 °C and above, steam treatment, and ironing help significantly reduce the number of pests.
Chemical Means
When bed bugs are detected, the use of special insecticides is often required. Such products must be used strictly according to the instructions and with all safety measures observed.
Regular Cleaning
Thorough cleaning remains one of the most effective preventive measures. It is important to regularly vacuum mattresses, upholstered furniture, carpets, and the space under the bed.
"To prevent the appearance of parasites, it is recommended to wash bedding at least once a week, maintain indoor humidity at 40–60%, and regularly air out the bedroom," advises sanitary doctor Elena Sokolova.
Even the cleanest-looking bed can become a habitat for dust mites, bed bugs, and other unwanted neighbors. Regular cleaning, humidity control, washing linens at high temperatures, and careful attention to the condition of the mattress help to prevent the problem in time. The sooner signs of parasite appearance are detected, the easier it is to restore cleanliness, comfort, and safety to the bedroom.
