Nuts are considered one of the healthiest foods for the heart, blood vessels, and brain. However, even the highest quality almonds, walnuts, or pistachios can quickly lose their taste and beneficial properties if stored improperly. Experts explain what mistakes buyers most often make and how to keep nuts fresh for as long as possible.

Nuts are rich in healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. However, their high oil content makes them a rather capricious product. Light, heat, and oxygen can accelerate the oxidation process, causing nuts to become bitter and lose some of their beneficial properties.

Mistake #1. Buying bulk nuts unnecessarily

Open containers in stores look attractive, but experts recommend approaching such purchases with caution.

It is impossible to know exactly how long the product has been on display and how often the stock is replenished. Additionally, nuts are constantly exposed to air, which speeds up their oxidation.

Another factor is hygiene. Dust and other contaminants often get into open containers.

What’s better: choose nuts in airtight factory packaging with a packing date indicated.

Mistake #2. Storing nuts in the kitchen cabinet

Many believe that nuts only need a dry and dark place. In fact, experts recommend storing them in the refrigerator or even the freezer.

The reason is simple: the healthy unsaturated fats in nuts are sensitive to heat and light. The higher the storage temperature, the faster the product loses freshness.

How to store properly:

  • in an airtight glass or plastic container;

  • in the refrigerator — for up to several months;

  • in the freezer — for up to a year or more;

  • away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Mistake #3. Completely trusting the expiration date

Even if the expiration date has not yet passed, this does not guarantee the product's ideal quality.

Much depends on the conditions of transportation and storage. Therefore, before consumption, nuts should be assessed by their appearance and smell.

If a sharp, bitter, or paint-like smell appears, it is better to discard the product.

Dietitian's Comment

Dietitian Anna Morozova notes:

"Nuts are considered foods with high nutritional value, but it is the healthy fats that make them sensitive to improper storage. If nuts go rancid, they not only lose their taste but also some of their beneficial properties. Therefore, it is better to buy small portions and store them in a cool place."**

Interesting Fact

Research shows that regular consumption of a small handful of nuts (about 25–30 grams per day) is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases and helps maintain normal cholesterol levels.

Nuts are rightly considered one of the healthiest snacks; however, their quality directly depends on storage conditions. Buy the product in airtight packaging, keep it in the refrigerator, and do not rely solely on the expiration date. Simple rules will help preserve the taste, freshness, and maximum beneficial substances.
