Scientists have determined which oils may accelerate cancer development

Researchers from the University of California have discovered a link between diet and the speed of cancer progression. According to their data, an excess of omega-6 fats in popular vegetable oils can stimulate the growth of cancer cells.

Researchers from the University of California have discovered a direct link between diet and the speed of cancer progression. A year-long experiment involving prostate cancer patients showed that an excess of omega-6 fats, found in popular vegetable oils, stimulates the division of cancer cells. A simple dietary adjustment can significantly slow the disease.

The experiment lasted a year and here’s what it revealed

The University of California study involved 100 men with early-stage prostate cancer. The patients were divided into two groups: the first followed their usual diet, while the second adhered to a special program under the supervision of a dietitian. The main goal was not weight loss but changing the balance of fatty acids in the diet.

Omega-6 vs Omega-3

The group that changed their diet strictly limited foods high in omega-6 fats (fried foods and cheap oils) and added more foods rich in omega-3 (salmon, mackerel, herring). The Ki-67 marker, which reflects the growth dynamics of cancer cells, showed a striking difference: those who consumed “traditional” oil had tumors that grew faster.

Three steps to a safer diet

Scientists recommend starting dietary adjustments as soon as possible. The first step should be replacing sunflower and corn oil with olive or butter (for frying). The second step is to consume fatty fish at least twice a week. The third is to maximize the avoidance of chips, fast food, and ready-made sauces.

Plant sources of omega-3 and beneficial supplements

For those looking to enhance protection, adding flaxseeds or chia seeds to breakfasts—one tablespoon a day provides the norm of plant-based omega-3—can be beneficial. However, researchers warn: before taking fish oil capsules, be sure to consult a doctor, as they can affect blood clotting.

The study proves that cancer control can begin with simple steps in your kitchen. Replacing sunflower oil with healthier alternatives and adding fish to the menu can help maintain health without aggressive medical intervention.

The authors of the study believe that even simple changes in diet can positively impact health. Reducing fried food intake, avoiding fast food, and increasing the proportion of omega-3-rich foods can help the body slow down the development of inflammatory and potentially dangerous processes.
