Extra virgin olive oil, long recognized as a treasure of Mediterranean cuisine for heart and metabolism, has now revealed yet another incredible superpower. Scientists shocked the world by proving that it actively protects our brain, working closely with the gut microbiome.
Extra virgin olive oil has long been considered the jewel of the Mediterranean diet, renowned for its ability to protect the heart and optimize metabolism. But here’s a completely sensational news: scientists have now confirmed that it is also a powerful shield for our brain, working through the astonishing gut microbiome. This groundbreaking study is the first to visually demonstrate a direct link between this unique oil and cognitive health in humans.
Swedish experts meticulously studied data collected from 656 participants aged 55 to 75, suffering from obesity and metabolic syndrome. As part of the large-scale PREDIMED-Plus project, which lasted two years, they closely monitored dietary habits, gut microbiota status, and results from memory and attention tests. The researchers particularly focused on comparing the effects of unrefined extra virgin oil and its refined counterpart.
The main finding was staggering: those who regularly consumed natural olive oil showed significantly better cognitive results and boasted a much more diverse microbiota, which is a sure sign of a healthy gut. At the same time, the consumption of refined oil, on the contrary, insidiously led to a noticeable depletion of this vital microbiota. The scientists even managed to identify a specific bacterium — Adlercreutzia, which they believe plays a key role in transmitting all these beneficial effects of the oil directly to our brain.
Why is Extra Virgin Oil So Important?
What is the secret of such uniqueness in extra virgin oil? The fact is that it retains its invaluable antioxidants, polyphenols, and vitamins thanks to careful mechanical extraction. Refined oils, on the other hand, undergo harsh chemical purification, irreversibly losing these essential substances in favor of extending shelf life.
Quality Matters
As researchers rightly point out, not all oils have the same beneficial effects on our brain. Lead researcher Jordi Salas-Salvado emphatically states: "This study confirms the idea that the quality of the fat consumed is just as important as its quantity." Indeed, high-quality olive oil not only protects our heart but also actively combats the aging of the brain itself.
Scientists enthusiastically view their stunning discovery as a powerful strategy in the fight against the development of dementia. In the context of the rapid aging of the global population, the emphasis on consuming the "right" fats takes on truly critical importance. Imagine how easily — a simple replacement of oil in the daily diet — can become an accessible and effective method of prevention!
The phenomenal results of this study were officially published in the prestigious scientific journal Microbiome.
