Basil Exhibited Antibacterial Effect Against Caries

Researchers at the Vishwanath Katti Institute of Dental Sciences found that basil extract suppresses bacteria that cause caries and contributes to strengthening tooth enamel. This is reported by IJCPD.

The experiment involved 40 children aged six to eight years. The participants were divided into two groups: one group received a dental varnish based on Ocimum basilicum (basil), while the other received a standard fluoride varnish. The procedures were repeated over four months, after which signs of caries and the number of Streptococcus mutans bacteria were assessed.

The analysis confirmed that both agents reduced caries activity. The fluoride varnish better restored enamel and reduced the number of dental lesions, while the basil-based agent was more effective at suppressing bacterial growth, indicating the antibacterial properties of the plant.

The authors noted that basil contains calcium and phosphorus compounds for enamel remineralization and natural antimicrobial substances. No side effects were observed during the experiment, so such agents may complement existing methods of caries prevention.
