5 Secrets of Drying Laundry That Many Don't Realize

Housewives approach washing more thoroughly than drying. These tips will help keep linens and clothes in good condition.

Fresh Air Is Better Than a Machine

A dryer, spinning clothes at high speeds, wears out the fibers of the fabric. The material can shrink or become deformed. After frequent use, clothes quickly lose their appearance. Drying indoors is also not the best idea. Humidity increases, and mold may appear in the apartment. The best option is fresh air. Hang your laundry in the yard or on an open balcony.

Follow Drying Rules

If you can't dry clothes outdoors, remember our tips:

* Do not dry clothes on heating radiators — this increases humidity. Delicate items can become deformed from the hot surface.

* Instead of a heater or radiator, use a fan. It will reduce the humidity level in the room and help dry laundry quickly.

* Place the dryer on the sunny side of the room; natural light will speed up the evaporation process.

* Before hanging on the line, shake and straighten out the folds — this will make ironing easier and help smooth out clothes without an iron.

* Do not overload the dryer: the more items, the longer they take to dry. If you need to dry quickly — put a dry towel inside the drum; it will absorb excess moisture.

* Adding ¼ cup of white vinegar during washing will soften items and make drying easier.

Special Approach

You should not dry bras in the machine — the cups will deform, and the straps will stretch. Lay the delicate item on a flat surface and unfasten it — this way, the accessory will last longer. Squeeze gently; it’s better to just blot with a bath towel.

Take jeans, cotton, and linen pants out of the dryer while they are still slightly damp. High temperatures shrink the fibers, causing the fabric to contract. Finish drying outdoors. If there are zippers on the clothes, they should be zipped up to prevent the teeth from damaging other items.

Outdoor Drying

If you have a cozy backyard or it’s common in your area to dry clothes outside, we have great news. Ultraviolet rays can bleach bed linens. Treat dark stains with lemon juice and hang them in a sunny spot. Nature will do its job. However, this applies to plain linens; colored patterns will fade quickly in the sun. If there is little space on the clothesline, use hangers. Hang clothing items crosswise. Don’t worry, they won’t get wrinkled; there’s good air circulation outside.

No Odor and Deformation

* We do not recommend drying clothes in the kitchen or bathroom. In the kitchen, the fabric will dry quickly but will absorb food odors and grease droplets. In the bathroom, the humidity level will rise, and clothes will sour and acquire a musty "aroma" of dampness.

* To prevent items from losing their shape, dry them flat, buttoned up. It’s better to hang skirts upside down using wooden clothespins. Plastic ones leave marks that are not always easy to smooth out.

* To avoid marks from the line or dryer rods, hang t-shirts and shirts on hangers. It’s better to use the side sections; this will save space for other wardrobe items.

* If you couldn’t take the laundry out of the drum right away, run the items again on the "rinse+spin" setting with added fabric softener. This way, the fabric won’t lose its shape and will smell like in the commercials.
