Spring Hormonal Disruption: Why It’s Important to Check Your Thyroid Right Now

In spring, many face a decline in strength, swelling, and decreased mood, attributing this to seasonal fatigue. However, such symptoms may be related to thyroid function and hormonal changes.

Why Spring Is a Critical Period

The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, and the functioning of many organs, including the reproductive system. Its hormones — T4 and T3 — directly affect overall well-being, skin condition, weight, and even concentration abilities.

In winter, the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone increases, helping the body retain heat. In spring, the need for this decreases, and along with it, the levels of thyroid hormones may drop.

Symptoms to Pay Attention To

Decreased thyroid activity may manifest as:

  • fatigue and drowsiness

  • swelling

  • decreased concentration

  • slowed metabolism

Such conditions are sometimes referred to as "spring hypothyroidism."

Causes of Seasonal Changes

In spring, the body often experiences a deficiency of important trace elements:

iodine — necessary for hormone synthesis vitamin D — actively consumed in winter iron and selenium — involved in metabolic processes

Additional influence comes from viral infections that may temporarily reduce thyroid activity.

How to Support the Thyroid

Nutrition

Include iodine-rich foods in your diet:

  • sea fish (cod, pollock, flounder)

  • seaweed

  • iodized salt

  • nuts and persimmons

Regular consumption of such foods helps maintain normal hormone production.

Trace Element Monitoring

Women during menstruation may be recommended to monitor iron levels and, if necessary, replenish them after consulting a specialist.

When to Get Tested

Experts recommend testing for TSH, free T4, and T3 at the end of winter or the beginning of spring — this allows for timely detection of disorders.

It is also advisable to undergo an ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland approximately once a year.

Why This Is Important

Early diagnosis helps avoid more serious disorders and timely adjust the condition.

By not ignoring the body's signals and maintaining hormonal balance, the spring period can be passed without pronounced fatigue and decreased energy.
