Vanilla Protects Cells from Oxidative Stress

Vanilla is capable of not only adding flavor to products but also providing protective effects on cells during oxidative stress. This is reported by RJPM.

The main active substance — vanillin — has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can reduce cell damage caused by reactive oxygen species and also participate in the regulation of chronic inflammatory processes associated with the development of cardiovascular pathologies, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Preclinical studies have shown that vanillin and extracts of Vanilla planifolia possess antitumor, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective potential. During experiments, an enhancement of antioxidant protection, a reduction in oxidative damage, and an impact on inflammatory signaling mechanisms were noted.

At the same time, scientists emphasized that a significant portion of the obtained data is based on experiments with cell cultures and animal models, so it is premature to speak of a confirmed therapeutic effect of vanilla in humans.
