Nutritionist: Stress and Lack of Sleep Hinder Weight Loss Even When Following Diets

Even when following a diet and exercising regularly, weight may not decrease. Chronic stress, lack of sleep, hormonal disorders, and micronutrient deficiencies can hinder this, said nutritionist Olga Redina.

Among the common reasons for weight stagnation are thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, or elevated cortisol levels: such hormonal disorders slow down metabolism, causing the body to retain reserves even in a calorie deficit.

According to the doctor, chronic stress also affects the weight loss process. Due to constant anxiety, cortisol levels rise. The hormone increases appetite and promotes fat accumulation, especially in the abdominal area. In a stressful state, a person may not control the amount of food consumed and is more likely to choose unhealthy food.

Lack of sleep complicates weight loss: insufficient sleep disrupts the balance of hunger and satiety hormones, increases cravings for sweets, and raises the risk of overeating. A deficiency of vitamin D, iron, or magnesium reduces energy levels and slows metabolism, which decreases the effectiveness of workouts. The nutritionist noted that in complex cases, it is necessary to consult specialists: an examination can help identify the cause and develop a weight loss strategy.
