The Big Wash Without Mistakes: How to Properly Care for Different Fabrics

Everyday washing seems like a simple task, but it is often where mistakes are made that ruin clothes. Textile care experts remind us: different fabrics require different approaches — from water temperature to spin cycle settings. Failing to adhere to these rules can lead to shrinkage, loss of shape, and color.

Delicate Fabrics: Minimum Load

Lace, chiffon, and fine lingerie are particularly sensitive to mechanical impact. They should not be washed together with heavy items — they snag, deform, and wear out quickly. It is recommended to use special washing bags, select a delicate cycle, and set the temperature no higher than 30°C. The spin cycle should be minimized or completely turned off.

Wool and Cashmere: No Sharp Temperature Changes

The main cause of shrinkage in woolen items is hot water and intense friction. Even high-quality materials like cashmere or merino require gentle handling. The optimal setting is "wool" or hand wash at a temperature of about 20–25°C. Using specialized detergents helps maintain the structure of the fibers and the softness of the fabric.

Silk: Only Gentle Detergents

Silk is one of the most demanding fabrics. Regular powders can damage the fibers, and hot water can change the color. The best solution is to use special detergents or a mild shampoo, wash in cool water, and avoid spinning. Silk items should not be wrung out but gently blotted with a towel.

Denim: Less is More

Jeans do not need frequent washing. Excessive exposure to water and detergents accelerates fading. Experts recommend washing denim after several wears, turning the items inside out and fastening the hardware. To preserve color, a small amount of salt can be added.

Outerwear: Attention to Filling

Down jackets and coats require careful maintenance. The main task is to maintain even distribution of the filling. For this, a delicate cycle and special washing balls are used to prevent the down from clumping.

Common Mistakes That Ruin Clothes

Mixing different types of fabrics is one of the most common problems. For example, synthetics and cotton require different temperatures and processing modes, and white and colored items should be washed separately to avoid staining.

...Proper washing is not just a household routine but a system of rules that helps extend the lifespan of clothing. By considering the characteristics of fabrics and following basic recommendations, most common problems can be avoided, keeping items in good condition.
