Short-term immersion in water improves mood

Specialists from the University of Chichester in the UK concluded that brief exposure to cold water can significantly boost mood. This is reported by SussexWorld.

The study involved 121 students experiencing fatigue and emotional stress. They had not previously practiced cold immersions. The experiment took place on the coast of West Wittering: volunteers entered the sea with a temperature of approximately 13.6 degrees for varying lengths of time — five, ten, and twenty minutes. Before the start and after the completion of the procedure, participants filled out questionnaires assessing their well-being.

The data obtained showed that even a short five-minute stay in cold water leads to a noticeable improvement in emotional state. No significant additional effect was observed with an increase in the duration of immersion.

According to scientists, such methods are acceptable for healthy individuals when basic safety precautions are followed. At the same time, people with chronic illnesses are advised to discuss such practices with a doctor in advance.
