How to Dye Eggs for Easter

Due to the chemical properties of some dyes, we divided popular dyeing methods into two groups: for eggs that can be eaten after dyeing and for eggs that will be used only as decorative elements.

For Eating

1. Onion Peel

The simplest way to dye eggs, known to many since childhood. First, boil a large amount of onion peel in water and let the broth steep, and only then boil the eggs in it. This way, the color will be brighter.

2. Plant Imprints

An improved method of boiling in onion peel, for which you will need leaves and twigs of plants. Even ordinary parsley and dill look beautiful. To prevent them from crumbling, soak them in cool water. Press the leaf against the raw egg and secure it with nylon (old nylon tights will work), tying it with a thread so it doesn’t slip off. Boil in the onion broth.

3. Marble Eggs

In the diluted dye according to the instructions, add a tablespoon of vegetable oil and the same amount of vinegar, and stir. Place boiled white eggs in the solution. Due to the oil, the eggs will be dyed unevenly. It is enough to leave them for about 4 minutes. To achieve more complex patterns, make the solution more concentrated or increase the time to 10–15 minutes.

4. Ombre Effect

To create a smooth color transition effect, place the egg in a ladle and dip it into the dye solution almost entirely. Then gradually lift the egg up so that it is dyed from a light shade to a dark one. The transition will be smoother if you constantly lift and lower the egg slightly. The entire procedure will take about 3–5 minutes.

5. Minimalism

For a bright Easter table, it is not even necessary to dye the eggs: just use your imagination and look for a solid-colored fabric napkin or craft paper at home. Use a rubber band or thread to gather the fabric or paper into the shape of bunny ears.

For Decoration

6. Golden Eggs

Artistic gold leaf, similar to golden foil, is used in many decorative works. It can be purchased at art supply stores. Such a pattern looks beautiful on both white and pre-dyed eggs. You can also completely cover the eggs with gold leaf.

7. Space Eggs

Pour room temperature water into a container, put on gloves. Pour blue or purple nail polish, or several colors. Stir with a stick to create a marble effect. Dip the egg into the solution, rotate it. Remove with tongs, and let it dry. Use a toothbrush or fine brush to paint white dots that resemble the Milky Way and stars.

8. Doodling Eggs

Eye-catching doodle patterns can be applied with a regular permanent marker or felt-tip pen.

9. Emoji Eggs

Yellow food dye plus markers. Very simple and fun.

10. Easter Bunny

Cut bunny ears out of paper and attach them with glue. Make a floral crown from stems with flowers, tying the ends with thread.

Useful Tips for Dyeing

  • To prevent the eggshells from cracking, take them out of the refrigerator 1–2 hours before boiling, and before boiling, add a little salt to the water.

  • To ensure that natural dye pigments adhere evenly to the egg and stick better to the shell, wipe them with a cotton pad soaked in vinegar or alcohol.

  • To make the dyed eggs shine and their color brighter, wipe them with a cotton pad soaked in vegetable oil.
