Shower Curtain: To Keep It Open or Closed?

The discussion about shower curtains is a real puzzle: should you leave it open, disregarding aesthetics, or close it and risk mold growth in the shower? Many opt for the former in hopes of avoiding mildew, but does it really work? Cleaning expert Marla Mok provided a clear answer to this question in a comment to southernliving.com – from both a hygienic and aesthetic perspective.

Advantages of an Open Shower Curtain

The crucial point comes down to moisture. It is recommended to leave the curtain open after taking a shower because it helps it dry completely.

"An open shower curtain allows air to circulate around it, reducing the likelihood of mold and mildew," explains Mok.

It also helps the curtain dry faster and ensures it dries completely. A fresher atmosphere and possibly even a visually larger space are the advantages of an open shower curtain.

Advantages of a Closed Shower Curtain

Undoubtedly, a closed shower curtain has an advantage in terms of aesthetics. But there are other benefits, including – surprisingly – control over mold and mildew. A closed curtain promotes more even drying. It also prevents water from dripping off the curtain onto the floor, creating puddles near walls or other areas more prone to mold and mildew growth.

Which Is Better?

When it comes to the stance on an open or closed shower curtain, Mok advocates for the former, recommending leaving the curtain open for at least an hour after showering. "This allows enough time for the curtain to dry and air out, preventing moisture buildup that can lead to mold and mildew," she explains.

Best Practices for Preventing Mold and Mildew

Mok also advises using a fan in the bathroom both during and after showering. A dehumidifier can also be used to remove excess moisture from the air.

The expert also states that it is important to regularly clean the shower curtain to prevent mold growth.

"Depending on the material, many curtains can be machine washed or wiped down with a cleaning solution. You can also use a liner to protect the main curtain from moisture, so be sure to clean or replace it regularly to extend its lifespan," she says.
