How to Get Rid of Unpleasant Odors in the House: Simple and Effective Methods

Have you noticed that every home has its own smell? In some places, it is associated with coziness — coffee and fresh pastries, while in others, it greets you with mustiness or the smell of tobacco. The good news is that the atmosphere in the house can be easily changed — without expensive products and complicated chemicals.

Here are proven methods that will help refresh your space.

1. Aroma During Cleaning

To fill your home with a pleasant scent while cleaning, you can use a vacuum cleaner.

Before starting, drop a few drops of essential oil (such as lavender or orange) on a cotton ball and vacuum it up. While working, it will gently spread the aroma throughout the apartment.

2. Freshness in the Refrigerator

Unpleasant odors in the refrigerator can be easily eliminated with natural remedies.

  • Drop essential oils of lemon and lavender on cheesecloth or an aroma stone and place it on a shelf.
  • Place an open container of baking soda — it absorbs odors well.

And, of course, don’t forget to regularly clean the refrigerator.

3. Clean Trash Bin

Even after taking out the trash, the smell may linger.

After washing and drying the bin, place a cotton pad or cheesecloth with a drop of essential oil (lavender or tea tree) at the bottom. This will help neutralize odors.

4. How to Freshen the Microwave and Oven

To eliminate odors:

  • Place a container with water and lemon or mint in the microwave for 2–3 minutes,
  • after that, simply wipe the surface — the dirt will come off easily.

In the oven, you can leave orange peels after cooking — they will give a light aroma.

5. Pleasant Smell in the Bathroom and Toilet

Use aroma stones or small fabric bags.

Add a few drops of essential oil (lavender, pine, ylang-ylang) and refresh the aroma once a week.

6. Freshness of Laundry

There are several simple ways to make laundry fragrant:

  • add a few drops of essential oil to the dryer,
  • use bags with natural fillers: orange peel, coffee, vanilla, cinnamon.

You can also add a little oil to the ironing water.

7. Universal Cleaning Solution

Mix:

  • 1 liter of vinegar
  • about 30 drops of essential oils (such as lemon, lavender, or tea tree)

The solution is suitable for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and helps eliminate odors.

8. How to Remove Odors and Limescale

Vinegar is an effective remedy against limescale and odors:

  • use it for kettles and pots,
  • add it to the sink or bathtub drain to eliminate unpleasant smells.

Additionally, you can use a mixture of baking soda, salt, and vinegar (1:1:2), leaving it in the drain for 15 minutes.

9. Homemade Air Freshener

You can make an air freshener yourself:

  • add a few drops of essential oil to water in a spray bottle,
  • spray in the room 2–3 times a week.

If a strong smell appears in the kitchen, boil water with lemon and cloves — this will quickly refresh the air.

10. Natural Insect Repellent

Instead of chemical agents, you can use essential oils:

  • lavender
  • eucalyptus
  • cedar

They can be sprayed or applied to cotton pads and placed around the room.

To keep your home smelling pleasant, you don’t need expensive air fresheners. Simple habits and natural remedies are often just as effective, if not better.
