Why Rubbing Your Eyes is Dangerous: Doctors Explain Possible Consequences

At first glance, the habit of rubbing your eyes seems harmless, but experts warn: it can lead to unpleasant and even serious vision problems.

Why the Desire to Rub Your Eyes Arises

Discomfort often arises due to irritation. This can be caused by dust, small particles, allergies, as well as dry eye syndrome or eyelid inflammation.

Rubbing increases tear production, which temporarily alleviates the condition. Additionally, nerve endings are stimulated, and a person does feel a brief relief. However, this effect is deceptive.

What Are the Risks

According to ophthalmologists, regular and intense eye rubbing can damage the cornea. In severe cases, this increases the risk of developing keratoconus — a condition where the cornea thins and changes shape, leading to impaired vision and the development of astigmatism.

Another issue is infections. When hands come into contact with the eyes, bacteria can easily enter, increasing the risk of inflammatory diseases, including conjunctivitis.

What to Do Instead

Doctors recommend giving up this habit and using safer methods to alleviate discomfort. For example:

  • use moisturizing drops ("artificial tears");

  • take breaks when working on the computer;

  • avoid contact with allergens and irritants.

If unpleasant sensations occur regularly, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist. A specialist can help determine the cause and suggest appropriate treatment.
