Why We Get Sick More Often: The Main Enemies of Immunity

The immune system protects the body from bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and also helps recognize and destroy abnormal cells that may be harmful to health. However, not only diseases can reduce its effectiveness: everyday habits significantly influence the state of immunity.

Lack of Sleep

Regular sleep deprivation negatively impacts health: chronic diseases worsen, mental disorders arise, and immune protection decreases. Studies show that people who sleep less than six hours a day are more likely to suffer from colds. For an adult, the optimal duration of sleep is 7–9 hours. Attempts to "catch up on sleep" during the weekends do not compensate for the lack of sleep during the weekdays.

Fast Food Abuse

Frequent consumption of fast food negatively affects the gut microbiome, which is directly linked to the immune system. These products contain high levels of salt, trans fats, flavorings, and taste enhancers, which can cause an imbalance in the microbiota and reduce the body's protective functions.

Chronic Stress

Constant stress increases cortisol and adrenaline levels, which can lead to excessive production of cytokines — proteins that cause inflammation. An excess of cytokines suppresses the activity of the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to infections.

Insufficient Oral Hygiene

Brushing teeth only once a day or completely ignoring it increases the risk of inflammatory gum diseases, such as gingivitis. The resulting inflammation distracts the resources of the immune system, reducing its overall effectiveness.

Recommendations for Strengthening Immunity

According to Olga Malinovskaya, head of the laboratory network, immunity can be supported by revising one’s lifestyle:

  • include more vegetables and fruits in the diet,
  • reduce alcohol consumption,
  • quit smoking and fast food,
  • normalize sleep patterns,
  • minimize stress.

The state of the immune system can be assessed through a comprehensive analysis called "Immune Status" (immunoglobulins IgA, IgM, IgG, basic immunogram with leukocyte formula) in KDL laboratories. This analysis is recommended for people who have become ill more frequently, as well as for those suffering from chronic diseases, including sexually transmitted infections.
