“I’m not that bad”: how we devalue our problems and suffer

Many continue to live with the belief that they can cope with difficulties on their own. At the same time, they fear judgment and perceive their vulnerability as weakness. This is why they find numerous reasons not to consult a psychologist, even when it becomes very difficult.

Belief in one’s own strength or fear of facing problems

For many, visiting a psychologist is perceived as an admission of defeat. "I can handle it myself" often hides not strength, but fear of confronting one’s own thoughts and feelings. According to psychologist Anastasia Bykova, this is a combination of the fear of admitting vulnerability and the unwillingness to face one’s problems.

Misunderstanding the role of a psychologist

Often, people simply do not know how exactly a psychologist can help and what therapy entails. Therefore, they postpone seeking help or believe that "nothing special will be done by a specialist."

Bad experiences create distrust

One unsuccessful experience with an unqualified specialist can long discourage the desire to try again. "They try therapy, encounter an unsuitable specialist or method, and have a negative experience," explains the expert.

Mental health is no less important than physical health

The psychologist compares the situation to a physical injury: if a leg is broken, no one considers it a weakness to consult a doctor. The same goes for emotional wounds — therapy is needed for recovery and self-care.

Finding the right specialist is part of the process

Not every therapy works the first time. Finding the right method and specialist is a normal stage, not a sign of weakness. Sometimes it is necessary to change the psychologist or method to achieve relief and improve life.

Soviet legacy and prejudices

Many prejudices have roots in the Soviet era. Consulting a psychologist was considered suspicious, and people with "independent" views could be deemed mentally ill. "For a long time, consulting a psychologist was considered only for the 'sick,' and some of these notions come from the Soviet times, where dissenters could be confined to hospitals," explains Bykova.

Modern rules protect the client

Today, psychologists work according to professional standards and an ethical code. Violating the rules can lead to loss of diploma and the right to consult. It is important to check the specialist’s education, their method, and adherence to ethics.

Devaluing one’s own pain

One of the traps is the belief that "it’s not that hard for me yet." Comparing one’s problems to others’ intensifies stress and exhaustion. Even if it seems that you are coping externally, the psyche signals a high level of tension.

Self-care is not weakness

Psychotherapy is a way to understand one’s reactions, reduce tension, and restore contact with oneself. "It’s a step to not leave yourself alone when it’s difficult. It’s self-care," summarizes Anastasia Bykova.
