In Estonia, support for the legalization of altruistic surrogacy is growing. How so?

The youth wing of the Reform Party believes that altruistic surrogacy should be legalized in Estonia to provide the opportunity for those who cannot have children due to health reasons.

“We should not deprive those who wish to have children of the opportunity to do so. It is time to keep up with the times, rather than cling to a reactionary past,” said Alijze Litvinov, chair of the health and freedoms commission of the youth wing of the Reform Party.

The young reformists referred to the question of altruistic surrogacy that arose during public debates and emphasized that, in their view, this is not about human trafficking, but about the possibility of creating a family for those who cannot carry and give birth to a child themselves. According to the organization, the discussion uses rhetoric based on intimidation.

Altruistic surrogacy means that the woman carrying the pregnancy does not receive payment for it. According to the “Young Reformists,” such a practice implies close relationships between the parties and requires a clear legal framework, which should include informed consent, psychological counseling, and the right of the surrogate mother to change her decision. The model in Denmark is cited as a successful example.

“It is time for Estonia to decide whether we are moving towards a Scandinavian value system focused on the future, or if we want to remain a reactionary Eastern European state,” concluded Litvinov.
