Maldives Introduces Smoking Ban for People Born on January 1, 2007

In the Maldives, the sale, purchase, and consumption of tobacco products have been banned for everyone born after January 1, 2007. The country has become the first in the world to completely restrict smoking for an entire generation. This was reported by The Guardian.

As noted by the authorities, the aim of the initiative is to strengthen the nation's health and raise a tobacco-free generation. The ban applies to all types of tobacco products. Both locals and visitors will not be able to purchase them. Sellers will now be required to check the age of buyers.

A complete ban on the import, storage, sale, and use of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices remains in effect. A similar measure is being discussed in the United Kingdom. In New Zealand, such a law was in place for about a year and was repealed in November 2023 in order to fund tax incentives.
