White bread and soda increase cancer risk after 50

Refined carbohydrates contribute to the development of chronic inflammation.

After the age of 50, the consumption of white bread, white rice, cakes, and sugary carbonated drinks may increase the risk of cancer, said oncologist Preeti Subhedar. This is reported by 20minutos.

According to the specialist, these products provoke sharp spikes in blood glucose levels, stimulating the production of insulin and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Since IGF-1 regulates cell division, its chronic elevation can lead to uncontrolled growth of tumor cells.

In addition, refined carbohydrates contribute to the development of chronic inflammation and an increase in the number of free radicals that damage cells and DNA. After the age of 50, metabolic and hormonal changes increase the body's sensitivity to such exposure, making proper nutrition particularly significant for cancer prevention.

Subhedar recommends composing a daily menu based on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, healthy fats, and lean protein. This approach helps stabilize blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, and provide the body with antioxidants. It is important not to completely exclude these products but to reduce their share in the diet for long-term reduction of cancer risks.
