What not to give for the New Year 2026. Some gifts can be disappointing.
Every year we rack our brains over what to choose — something useful, pleasant, and heartfelt. But there are gifts that can inadvertently spoil the mood. To prevent this from happening, let's figure out what should not be placed under the tree.
Dust Collectors
All sorts of magnets, figurines, and toys with the symbol of the year have long ceased to evoke delight. Usually, such items simply take up space, gather dust, and after a couple of months end up in a distant drawer (or trash bin). The exception: original and stylish figurines of good quality that fit perfectly into the interior. There are many craftsmen and unusual stores with home goods where you can buy truly worthwhile and amazing items. We are talking about cheap souvenirs from stores like 1000 little things.
Handmade
Yes, yes, we remember the saying: "The best gift is a gift made by hand." A clarification, we are talking about one's own clumsy and careless handmade items. However, if you are engaged in fabric painting, knitting, sewing, painting, making exclusive jewelry, or crafting soap or decorative candles — then please do. Such a gift warms the soul.
Personal Hygiene Items
If the previous gifts had some caveats, here there are absolutely no options. Never give personal hygiene items to anyone. This is all very individual and relates to the intimate sphere of life. Such a gift can deeply offend a person, as it implies that you are hinting at their lack of cleanliness. Therefore, it is better not to give toothpaste, deodorants, shampoos, shower gels, or intimate hygiene products. Moreover, for many, the brand, composition, texture, and scent are of great importance.
Gift Certificates
Today, almost every company offers the option to purchase a gift certificate for their goods or services. Such a gift seems convenient and universal; however, in practice, it is not always useful. The main problem is that certificates are easily forgotten. Often, due to a lack of time, a person postpones their use for "later" and ultimately just does not manage to take advantage of the gift. Especially if the certificate is valid for a limited time. Another common issue is the overly narrow specialization of the certificate. For example, a certificate for a ballroom dancing master class may not suit a friend who would prefer to attend a floral arrangement course. Or a certificate for a parachute jump will be given to someone who is afraid of heights or for whom such extreme activities are contraindicated.
Money
In principle, money is a good gift. But only without soul... They kind of hint: "I really didn't have time to choose a gift for you, so you'll buy it yourself." It's one thing when a person asks for money for their birthday, and another when you give a conditional 1000 rubles for New Year. On the other hand, if the amount is substantial, then maybe a present that expresses attention and care is not necessary?
Pets and Houseplants
It's not surprising; there are people who consider this a good gift. However, it would be nice to first clarify with the person if they want it. After all, taking care of an animal or plant requires attention and additional financial investment. You are placing a certain responsibility and obligation on the person. They will have to find someone to take care of the pet during vacations and business trips.
Health Products and Medical Devices
No one wants to think about their illnesses during the holidays. And is this even a gift? These are necessary purchases that a person would make without you. Even elderly relatives should not be given such gifts. You can buy all the necessary medications and a blood pressure monitor, but do not present them as a gift; just give them along with the main New Year gift.
Tableware and Kitchen Appliances
It used to be customary to give dinnerware sets for holidays. Nowadays, this is considered bad form. Many people already have everything necessary in their kitchens: dishes, appliances, and accessories chosen according to their interior and personal preferences. Therefore, gifts from this category can easily miss the mark. For example, someone may not need another frying pan if they already have five. Or you might give a set of plates in the wrong color scheme or glasses from the wrong brand. There may not even be room for large appliances. Moreover, some may perceive such a gift as a hint that they need to cook more.
P.S. If close relatives asked you for this in advance, then it’s acceptable.
