For a Lasting Result: How to Properly Apply Matte Lipstick for a Flawless Look

Matte lipstick emphasizes everything: the beauty of the lip shape and, unfortunately, any imperfections. If applied correctly, the longevity increases significantly, the shade looks more luxurious, and the makeup appears sharper. Makeup artist Lyubov Brusnitsyna shared secrets that always yield consistent results.

Prepare the Surface of the Lips

Matte textures are unforgiving to flakiness, so the first step is to remove any excess. "A gentle scrub or massaging the lips with a soft toothbrush and a couple of drops of honey will work — don’t press too hard, just remove the dry particles. Then apply a thin layer of balm: let it absorb for a minute, then blot the excess. The smoother the surface, the longer the color will last," explains the expert.

Use a Pencil — Not Just for Lining, But Also as a Primer

A pencil creates adhesion, acting like a thin glue for the lipstick. "Outline the contour, slightly going inside, and blend the color over the entire surface of the lips. This will make the lipstick last longer and the application neater. It also prevents the product from bleeding, especially if the shade is bright," states the professional makeup artist.

Apply Lipstick in Two Layers, with a Blotting Break

The first layer should be the thinnest, almost translucent. Blot with a tissue. Then apply the second, thicker layer. This "sandwich" prevents the lipstick from cracking. If the shade is complex (plum, red), you can add a third layer — but each layer should be thin.

Set the Result — But Carefully

The longevity is enhanced by a translucent loose powder. Do not powder the lips directly — it’s better to place a thin tissue and brush over it. This creates a very light setting without a chalky effect. If a softer finish is needed, you can stick to a setting spray — a light mist and you’re done.

Nuances for Mature Makeup

As we age, lips lose volume and become drier, so matte formulas require special preparation. Be sure to use a nourishing mask or a thick balm beforehand, 20–30 minutes before makeup, to smooth the skin texture. Avoid ultra-matte lipsticks — cream-based options are preferable. It’s better to soften the contour with a brush: harsh lines visually age. Shades in warm tones (berries, tea rose, butterwood) look softer and fresher than dull cool reds and fuchsia, but choose based on your skin undertone (cool or warm).
