In November, the premiere of the tragedy 'Hecuba' by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides was held at the Daugavpils Theatre in a Latgalian production directed by Tatiana Stepanchenco-Bogdana.
The action of the play takes place shortly after the fall of Troy. Hecuba has lost everything in the war – her husband, her throne, her freedom, and several children. 'When it seems that the cup of suffering has overflowed, she experiences an unforgivable betrayal, and in despair, a thirst for just revenge is born. From a hostage of circumstances, she transforms into the mistress of her fate,' the description of the play at the theatre states.
The role of Hecuba in the play will be performed by actress Julia Laha, who believes that Euripides wrote a work that is very relevant today and tells not only about the shadow of war that hangs over people long after it ends, but also about an amazing inner strength.
'Hecuba' will be the first work of director Stepanchenco-Bogdana in Latvia. She is a graduate of the final year of the Moscow State Institute of Theatre Arts named after Lunacharsky. Shortly after graduating from the institute, she moved to Germany and then to France, where she participated in various theatrical and film projects, directed plays, and taught acting.
