Can You 'Train' Your Hair to Get Dirty Less Often

We explore whether regular hair washing affects the rate of hair soiling.

There is a common belief that hair should be washed a strictly defined number of times per week — some think less often, others more. In reality, hair should be washed when it gets dirty, that is, as it becomes soiled. When this moment arrives was explained by the doctor.

Expert: Anastasia Kurskaya, trichologist

The frequency of washing your hair depends on several factors:

  • Scalp type: oily scalp requires daily washing, dry — about once a week, normal — a couple of times a week.
  • Hair length and structure: short hair gets dirty faster, curly hair — slower.
  • Seasonality: in summer and winter, hair is washed more often due to heat and wearing headwear.
  • Improper care: with frequent washing, one should use products for daily use.
  • Excessive styling products: if hair is coated with hairspray, gel, or wax, it should be washed off immediately in the evening, not postponed.

Can you train your hair to get dirty less?

No. Dirt sticks to hair, and sebaceous glands produce secretions at a constant rate. Frequent washing will not make hair get dirty faster.

The reverse is also true: washing your hair less often does not make it cleaner. On the contrary, excessive waiting leads to dandruff, itching, micro-inflammations, and even alopecia.
