Cardiologist Olga Stoiko studied how sugar and simple carbohydrates affect the condition of blood vessels.
The doctor warns that excess sugar and simple carbohydrates can cause disorders that contribute to the development of heart attacks. Products with added sugar, such as tea, coffee, white bread, soft drinks, cookies, and many others, are particularly dangerous. These products can cause inflammation and oxidative stress, damaging the walls of blood vessels.
The endothelium of blood vessels controls their tone, both in normal conditions and in diseases. If it is damaged, cholesterol can begin to accumulate on the walls of blood vessels, even with normal indicators. This leads to the formation of cholesterol plaques.
Excessive sugar consumption can also cause the liver to produce more fats, which accumulate on the walls of blood vessels.
Olga Stoiko notes that each molecule of sugar retains four molecules of water, which raises blood pressure.
The cardiologist recommends switching to complex carbohydrates, such as vegetables, fruits, beans, and lentils. It is also important to consume enough protein.
To maintain cardiovascular health, the doctor advises drinking green tea, which is rich in antioxidants. However, she warns that adding sugar negates the benefits. Instead, a slice of lemon or ginger can be added.
