Scientists Explain Why Cats Eat Grass and Houseplants

Why do cats love to eat plants? Scientists have discovered that this is a natural way to combat hairballs in the stomach.

Many cat owners find that their pets suddenly start nibbling on houseplants or grass. This is often perceived as mischief or a sign of a troublesome nature. However, a new study by researchers from High Point University in North Carolina has shown that this behavior has a practical explanation. This was reported by Discovery Magazine.

During microscopic analysis, the scientists examined six samples of cat fur that had formed in the stomach. It turned out that the serrated edges of the leaves and the microscopic protrusions on their surface intertwine with the fur and help to expel it naturally. The researchers compared this process to clearing a clogged drain.

This discovery debunks the long-standing hypothesis that cats eat grass to rid themselves of intestinal parasites. It turned out that the structure of the leaves is too small to deal with worms that are many times larger. Instead, it is the fur that is the "burden" that the plants help to remove.

The scientists also noted that cats are particularly attracted to garden herbs and frost-resistant houseplants, specifically Tradescantia. All of them share one common feature — a rough surface at the microscopic level, perfectly suited for "grabbing" fur.

However, it is worth noting that some houseplants are toxic to animals, so cat owners should be cautious.
