The self-driving bus was rear-ended by a tram in Gothenburg, Sweden, just an hour after it began transporting passengers, Reuters reports.
"The bus braked and was hit by a tram," said Patrick Chi, a representative of Vasttrafik, which is owned by the regional public transport authority.
The collision, which Chi stated did not result in injuries, raises questions about the integration of autonomous vehicles into urban traffic, especially as Gothenburg has begun annual trials of autonomous public transport using the e-ATAK bus from Karsan.
A photo on the public broadcaster SVT's website showed damage to the bus and a banner on its rear reading: "Keep your distance! The bus may brake suddenly."
Chi noted that the circumstances of the collision are still to be investigated, adding that "there was a backup driver on the bus, ready to take control if necessary."
