Last week, a crossbow was among the means used to deliver banned substances and items to places of detention, reported the Latvian Prison Administration.

The administration notes that the methods of delivering banned items to prisons are becoming increasingly inventive and technologically advanced — manually, using bows, crossbows, or special devices.

There is also the practice of pulling banned items over fences with ropes, using vehicles to complicate the identification of individuals, as well as employing drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles.

Furthermore, the Latvian Prison Administration has observed that so-called "test drops" are being conducted to check the response of staff and the functioning of security systems.

In total, last week there were 70 recorded attempts to deliver banned items or substances to places of detention.

To prevent banned items from entering prisons, enhanced surveillance of the territories is being conducted, regular patrols are organized, checks of the area are carried out after each identified drop, video surveillance systems are being upgraded, and security fences and technologies are being improved.
