What is this mystery?
It concerns a section located in the vast region of Utopia Planitia – a huge plain in the northern hemisphere of the Red Planet. This unusual area was first recorded back in 1976 by the American NASA 'Viking' program probes. Later, new images, including data from the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter, convincingly confirmed that the dark zone continues to steadily increase.
How much has it changed?
This Martian 'shadow' represents a section of the surface covered with volcanic ash and rocks left over from ancient eruptions. According to researchers' estimates, its southern boundary has shifted by at least 320 kilometers. This impressive change may indicate that the zone is expanding by about 6.5 kilometers annually.
