The icy continent is becoming a natural laboratory for testing clean energy technologies.

A delegation of representatives from Chile and the European Union visited the Antarctic research station "Professor Julio Escudero" on King George Island, managed by the Chilean Antarctic Institute. There, participants were shown the progress of a pilot project aimed at creating energy infrastructure based on renewable hydrogen – hydrogen produced using wind or solar energy without carbon dioxide emissions. This energy source is considered a replacement for diesel fuel in remote areas where stable fuel supplies are difficult to ensure. Its goal is to test how hybrid energy systems operate in one of the harshest places on the planet.

The director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), Hino Casassa, reported that about 200 million Chilean pesos (approximately 213,000 USD) were allocated for the design of the pilot green hydrogen production facility. The funds were provided by the German Society for International Cooperation and the European Union. According to him, one of the main challenges is related to construction on the permafrost of Antarctica, where any engineering work requires a special approach.

"Testing renewable hydrogen-based energy systems in the extreme conditions of Antarctica provides valuable knowledge for planning energy infrastructure in isolated areas around the world," noted Javier Ortiz de Zuniga, head of the energy sector at GIZ in Chile.

"This visit promotes scientific and technological cooperation between the European Union and Chile, advances the green transition, and fulfills international commitments in the field of biodiversity conservation, including the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources," said Mercedes Rodriguez Sarro, deputy head of the EU delegation in Chile.

Thus, Antarctica is becoming a natural laboratory for testing clean energy technologies. At the same time, the project demonstrates how important international cooperation remains in finding solutions to global energy challenges.
